Pool 7 fishing, from Trempealeau down to Dresbach
Pool 7 is the lake-and-channel hybrid sitting immediately above the Genoa corridor. Lock and Dam 7 at river mile 702.5 holds Lake Onalaska on the Wisconsin side and dumps you intoPool 8 fishing near Genoa a few miles downstream — still the same four-fish walleye table until you clear Lock and Dam 8.
This page is the Pool 7 spoke under ourriver overview for this stretch pillar: Black River colour, Onalaska backwater bass water, and the WI–MN paperwork that still owns the whole reach.

What makes Pool 7 different?
It is short — about 12 river miles — and structurally split. Upstream toward Trempealeau you still get braided channels and sloughs. Downstream the pool opens into Lake Onalaska, a broad backwater lake the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources describes as receiving Mississippi and Black River flow behind barrier islands that protect the navigation channel.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 12 river miles |
| Aquatic habitat | 13,300 acres |
| Dam location | River mile 702.5, near La Crescent, Minnesota |
| Counties | La Crosse County, Wisconsin and Winona County, Minnesota |
| Defining feature | Lake Onalaska backwater lake above Lock and Dam 7 |
Lock and Dam 7 itself is a 940-foot concrete structure with five roller gates and eleven Tainter gates, a 110-by-600-foot lock, and an observation deck the Corps keeps open when conditions allow. The dam contact address is La Crescent, Minnesota; the lake and most trailer traffic sit on the Wisconsin bank in La Crosse County.
All of it sits inside the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. Pull the Pool 7 refuge map before you run closed areas or slow-no-wake zones around Rosebud Island and the Brice Prairie tracts.
How should you fish Lake Onalaska?
Treat the lake as panfish and largemouth water first, then as a staging flat for migrating fish when the Mississippi is pushing colour through the cuts. The Corps restricted some Mississippi inflow historically to protect the navigation channel, so the lake does not always read like main-channel stage even when the Brownsville gauge is moving.
Weed edges, island lee sides and the oxygenated cuts behind restored islands are the places we spend time when the lake is clear. When the Black River is dumping after rain, we slide toward clearer secondary channels rather than pounding the dirty plume. This is not Genoa dam-face walleye fishing — that starts in earnest once you drop into Pool 8.
Which limits apply above Lock and Dam 7?
The whole pool is Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary water under chapter NR 21. There is no Iowa chapter to reconcile here — that fight starts mid-Pool 9. Walleye and sauger fall in the Pools 3 to 8 four-fish aggregate on the Wisconsin table.
| Species | Season | Daily bag | Size limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walleye and sauger | Continuous | 4 in aggregate | No size limit for sauger, 15 inches for walleye; only one walleye or sauger longer than 20 inches |
| Largemouth and smallmouth bass | Continuous | 5 in aggregate | 14 inches |
| Channel and flathead catfish, hook and line | Continuous | 10 in aggregate | No size limit, except that only one may be longer than 30 inches |
| Northern pike | Continuous | 3 | No size limit, but only one may be longer than 30 inches |
| Sunfish and bluegills combined | Continuous | 15 in total | None |
| Crappies, yellow perch | Continuous | 15 of each | None |
| White and yellow bass combined | Continuous | 10 in total | None |
| Rock bass | Continuous | 25 | None |
| Lake sturgeon and paddlefish | No open season | — | — |
Where do you launch on Pool 7?
The Lake Onalaska inventory maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources listsBrice Prairie Channel Landing (Fred Funk) among the public landings, along with Fishermans Road, Nelson Park and several spillway and walk-in sites. On the Lake Onalaska side of Pool 7, the large backwater lake above Lock and Dam 7. Confirm fees and condition with the managing town before you trailer — DNR inventories go stale without notice.
For every other ramp on the corridor, use theWisconsin boat access inventory and therefuge Pool 7 maps. Minnesota shore launches near Dresbach and Dakota show up in Minnesota’s recreation tools; we do not hand-maintain a second list that will rot.
What should you target here?
Largemouth bass and bluegill are why Lake Onalaska shows up in habitat-restoration write-ups. Walleye and sauger still matter on the main-channel seams and below the dam face once you are thinking about the Pool 8 drop. Channel cats use the deeper cuts when the lake warms.
For length-to-weight without a scale, keep thelargemouth bass weight calculator and thewalleye weight calculator bookmarked. River tactics for eyes after you clear Dresbach live on thewalleye playbook on the pools page.
When does the Black River change the bite?
After a hard rain on the Black, Lake Onalaska muddies and cools before the main Mississippi below La Crosse looks any different. That is a bass-and-panfish day on clearer edges, not a day to insist on main-channel eyes in dirty water. When the lake is clear and stable, dawn weed edges and island lee sides are the hours we take.
The stage panel above is a corridor check, not a lake thermometer. Pair it with thebest fishing time calculator if you care about light and pressure for the hour, and remember every headline species here is listed continuous under Wisconsin boundary-water rules.
Questions anglers ask about Pool 7
How long is Pool 7?
About 12 river miles from Lock and Dam 6 at Trempealeau, Wisconsin, down to Lock and Dam 7 at river mile 702.5 near La Crescent and Dresbach, Minnesota. That length comes from the United States Geological Survey Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center pool description, not from a guess off a road map.
Is Lake Onalaska the same as Pool 7?
Lake Onalaska is the large lake-like section in the lower pool, bounded by Lock and Dam 7 on the south, Wisconsin on the east, the Black River delta to the north and barrier islands that define the navigation channel on the west. The pool also includes braided channel and slough water farther upstream toward Trempealeau.
Do Pool 7 walleye limits match Pool 8?
Yes for the Wisconsin-Minnesota boundary-water table: Pool 7 sits in the Pools 3 to 8 walleye and sauger aggregate of four fish under Wisconsin chapter NR 21, with a 15-inch walleye minimum and only one fish longer than 20 inches. Cross Lock and Dam 8 into Pool 9 and that bag rises to six with a protected slot.
Is there a live gauge inside Lake Onalaska?
This page uses the United States Geological Survey stage reading at Brownsville, Minnesota, which sits in Pool 8 just below Lock and Dam 7. It is an honest downstream reference for the corridor, not Lake Onalaska pool stage. We would rather label it that way than pretend a tailwater reading is the lake.
Why does the Black River matter here?
The Black River discharges into Pool 7 and helps feed Lake Onalaska. Pool 8 only receives a minimum discharge down the old Black River channel through the Onalaska Dam. A hard rise on the Black colours and cools the lake side of Pool 7 before the main-channel water below Dresbach looks any different.
Heading downstream past Lock and Dam 7? OurPool 8 fishing guide covers the Genoa reach where the Root and La Crosse rivers start rewriting the water, still under the same four-fish walleye bag until you clear Lock and Dam 8.
