About Big River Fishing

What is this site for?

There is no shortage of fishing content online. There is a serious shortage of fishing content you can check. Search for a walleye length-to-weight chart and you will find a hundred tables, none of which name the study behind them. Search for Mississippi River bag limits and you will find summaries that are a season out of date and do not say which pool or which state they apply to.

We built this the other way round. The data comes first, in a typed format that will not compile without a publisher name, an HTTPS link and a verification date. Then the page gets written around it. If a claim cannot be sourced, it does not appear — not softened, not hedged, absent.

What do we actually promise?

• Every number is traceable. Not "according to studies" — the actual publishing body, the actual URL, the date we checked it. Those appear at the bottom of every page carrying factual claims.
• No invented precision. Where the underlying data supports a range, you get a range. See our editorial policy for how we decide.
• Corrections are visible. When we get something wrong we fix it and say what changed, rather than quietly editing the page.
• Advertising never touches editorial. No sponsor has input into what we publish, and no ad sits within a screen of a calculator result.

How accurate are the calculators?

As accurate as the equations behind them, which is a real limit rather than a modest one. The fish weight tools run published standard-weight equations built from tens of thousands of measured fish, but those equations describe populations, not the individual in your hands. A fish that has just spawned and one full of eggs can differ by a quarter of their body weight at the same length.

So each tool carries a formula card naming the equation, who published it, what it was validated against and what it assumes. Our research methodology sets out how we grade each source, and theour fish weight calculator is the clearest example of the grading in practice.

What does the site cover today?

Seven fishing calculators, and two Upper Mississippi navigation pools in depth: Pool 8 fishing from La Crosse to Genoa andPool 9 fishing from Genoa to Lynxville. Theriver guide ties them together and covers the boundary-water rules that apply across both.

Two pools rather than fourteen is deliberate. We would rather cover the water we fish properly than generate a page for every pool from a template, which is exactly the pattern search engines have spent the last two years demoting — and rightly.

Where do the numbers on this site come from?

Every calculator and pool figure is wrapped in a sourced value that fails the build if it has no agency or paper behind it. The full list lives on theresearch methodology page, with verification dates next to each equation and limit table. We would rather ship a thinner page than a number we cannot re-check.

How do you take part?

We do not run a forum and we do not publish user-submitted reports as facts. If a limit changed, an equation looks wrong, or a ramp note is stale, use thecontact page — corrections go through the same sourcing check as everything else on the site. That is the only participation path we trust.

How do you reach us?

Corrections first, everything else second. If a figure on this site is wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source and fix it. The contact page has the details, and ourfact-checking policy describes what happens after you write.

Questions about who we are

Who writes Big River Fishing?

A small editorial team that fishes Pools 7 through 10 of the Upper Mississippi. Pages are signed by the team rather than by individuals, because the review process is a team one and inventing a named expert with no verifiable credentials would be worse than signing honestly.

Is this site connected to the Big River Inn?

No. The domain previously belonged to a lodging business in Genoa, Wisconsin that no longer operates. Big River Fishing has no connection to that business, its former owners or its former staff, and offers no lodging or hospitality services of any kind.

How do you make money?

Advertising, through Google AdSense. We take no sponsored posts, no paid placements in comparison tables and no affiliate commissions on tackle. No advertiser has ever seen a page before it published, and no ad unit sits within a screen of a calculator result.

Why do the calculators refuse to give a single number?

Because the published data behind them does not support one. A standard-weight equation describes a population of fish; a printed line diameter is rounded. We show the range the source actually supports and explain where it comes from.
